- Wearing safety goggles, measure and cut all wood pieces using a handsaw or jigsaw.
- Sand the edges of each cut piece as well as the surface of the redwood.
- Squarely align one short end piece with the end of one of the longer side pieces, and attach with a brad nailer.
- Attach the other side piece to the already-attached end piece, then close the square frame with the remaining end piece.
- Evenly space and drill three holes in the bottom wood piece to create drainage holes.
- Flip the box over, and attach the bottom piece along the sides and ends with the brad nailer.
- Attach wood furring strips around the bottom of the planter to raise it, allowing water to drain.
- Spray entire box with varnish, and allow it to dry.
- Place a layer of newspaper and an inch of gravel at the bottom of the planter to help with drainage, then fill with potting soil.
- Plant flowers in the box, and display it on an outdoor shelf, table or below a window.
